Let's Get That Fat!

The main ingredient in these mini chocolate chip cookies is almond butter. So with that, I decided to write about some health benefits of nuts, specifically the fat content. Nuts are a good source of magnesium, vitamin E, protein, fiber and a great source of healthy fats. For a long time, the common trend was to stay away from anything with fat in it, but I think most people are now understanding there is an important place in our nutrition for healthy fats. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are the classic “good fats”. Saturated and trans-fats are the “bad fats”. We now know that good fats are important for weight control, reduce hunger, protect your heart and brain, and gives you energy. Again, nuts are a great source of poly and monounsaturated fats. They also have saturated fat. Saturated fat is not quite the bad guy we used to think it was. I would still encourage to eat this in moderation, and make sure you’re getting mostly poly and monounsaturated fats. Good fats will increase your HDL-good cholesterol and help reduce your LDL- bad cholesterol. They can also lower your triglycerides and reduce inflammation in the body. And did you know that good fats will also help stimulate your mood? Another great reason to incorporate good fats into your diet.
Good sources of monounsaturated fats include: olive oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, avocados, olives, almonds, peanuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, pecans, and cashews.
Good sources of polyunsaturated fats include: sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseed, walnuts, salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, trout, sardines, soybeans.
In summary nuts are a great source of “good fats”. They will help keep your weight and hunger in check, in addition to having many protective systemic effects. So get out there and eat some nuts. And try this cookie recipe. They are perfect kid size cookies. They would be a great choice to incorporate as a dessert in back to school lunches.
One more tip: If you are looking for a great place to get nuts in bulk, check out Nuts.com. Not only can you custom order trail mix and nuts, they have dried fruit and veggies too! Derek and I love ordering from them in bulk.
Good luck out their families! Stay healthy!
